A 64-year-old man has died after he was struck by a tow truck near a shopping center in Kahului.

He has been identified as Van Tomita of Kahului.

Police said a white 1992 Isuzu flatbed tow truck was making a right turn out of the Maui Marketplace onto Dairy Road at approximately 1:10 p.m. Monday when the truck collided into a pedestrian later identified as Tomita.

Tomita was operating an electric personal mobility device within a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Police said he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The tow truck driver was not injured.

It’s unknown at this time whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Police are continuing their investigation.

This is Maui County’s 14th traffic-related fatality compared to seven at the same time last year.
