All Kalanianaole lanes open after water pipe repair in Aina Haina

UPDATE: 11:40 a.m.

State Department of Transportation officials said that the Kalanianaole Highway morning contraflow lane will resume Wednesday. The lane had been closed Monday and today because of repairs to a broken water line in Aina Haina. The closure clogged East Oahu traffic, especially in the west-bound direction.

Tuesday 7:35 a.m.

All lanes of Kalanianaole Highway are now open in both directions after crews completed repairs to a broken water pipe this morning.

Repairs to the 6-inch service lateral pipe were completed around 7:30 a.m. and water service was restored to all customers, according to the Board of Water Supply. However, there is no contra-flow lane this morning.

There is bumper-to-bumper westbound traffic through Hawaii Kai.

Monday 5 p.m.

The state Department of Transportation says the morning contraflow on Kalanianaole Highway will not open on Tuesday.

4:40 p.m.

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply said three eastbound lanes are open between Wailupe Circle and West Hind Drive on Kalanianaole Highway as crews continue to work on a broken water pipe.

They said that motorists are not allowed to turn left onto West Hind Drive during the afternoon commute while work is ongoing.

After rush hour, crews will close the left eastbound lane as they finish the work, which is expected to continue into the evening.

West-bound Kalanianaole lanes are open.

1:40 p.m.

Board of Water Supply officials said workers have discovered that the Kalanianaole Highway water line that broke in Aina Haina is a 4- or 6-inch service pipe, and not a 16-inch water main.

The crews continued to do repair work this afternoon near the West Hind Drive intersection. They have reopened two right, eastbound lanes between Wailupe Circle and West Hind Drive. But motorists should plan for extra travel time or avoid the area if possible, officials said.

Work to repair the service main and roadway will continue into the evening commute, they said.

The pipe broke Sunday night and affected the morning commute today as the repair work forced the closure of the usual contraflow lane.

Board officials said four customers were without water service this afternoon.

12:30 p.m.

Although Board of Water Supply crews continue to work on a broken water main in Aina Haina, two eastbound lanes will be open for the afternoon commute.

Repair crews are taking “special care” to restore the three traffic lanes in time for the afternoon rush house, the state Department of Transportation tweeted today.

A water main break closed Kalanianaole Highway lanes in both directions in Aina Haina Sunday night, and the work is expected to disrupt this morning’s East Oahu morning commute.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply officials said a crew is working on a 16-inch main break on Kalanianaole Highway near West Hind Drive.

Three eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of the highway are closed between Wailupe Circle and West Hind Drive, they said. The far-right eastbound lane of the highway remains open and motorists are advised to expect delays.

Work to repair the water main and roadway will continue well into today, and the morning contraflow on Kalanianaole Highway will not open, they said.

The state Department of Transportation said all of its construction activities in the area have been canceled until the water main is repaired.

No customers have lost water service, board officials said.
