Suspect in fatal Kauai hit-and-run turns himself in to police

Kauai police arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with Sunday’s deadly hit-and-run in Kalaheo.

The suspect, of Kalaheo, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of accidents involving serious or bodily injury or death. He was released pending further investigation.

Police said a police officer who was driving home on Halewili Road discovered a man’s body on the roadway at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday.

He has been identified as Florentino Maipa, 24, of Eleele.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police said Maipa was walking on the eastbound lane of Halewili Road when a vehicle traveling eastbound struck him.

The vehicle was not at the scene.

Maipa was taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of death is pending autopsy results.

Police sought the public’s help Monday for any information on the hit-and-run. Based on the debris from the crash scene, police determined the vehicle that may have been involved was a silver Nissan Frontier truck made between 1998 and 2004.

The suspect turned himself in at the Lihue police station and told police he could have been the driver involved in the hit-and-run.

Police recovered his vehicle, a 2004 silver Nissan Frontier, from his home.
