A large fire destroyed a home in Waiehu on Maui early Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 857 West Kaena Pl. at the Waiehu Heights subdivision at approximately 12:40 a.m.

When they arrived, they observed flames emanating from the roof of the single-story home and about 50 percent of the structure fully engulfed in the fire, said Capt. Paul Haake, spokesman of the Maui Fire Department, in a news release.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 1:22 a.m.

Haake said occupants of the home safely escaped at the time of the fire.

No injuries were reported. Haake noted that it was unclear exactly how many occupants were in the residence when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Haake said the home had no electricity before the fire occurred and several derelict vehicles were in the driveway and on the road fronting the residence.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $260,000. The fire also caused minor damage to two neighboring structures.

The American Red Cross assisted two displaced residents who remained at the scene.
