For the first time in 15 years, pop music legend Lionel Richie will perform in Hawaii, with a concert announced for 8 p.m. Jan. 25 at Blaisdell Arena.
Richie rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of the soul and funk outfit the Commodores, before striking out on his own in 1982 and quickly finding superstardom with four No. 1 singles — “Truly,” “All Night Long (All Night),” “Hello” and “Say You, Say Me.”
He also previously topped the charts three times — for nine weeks in 1981 with his duet with Diana Ross, “Endless Love,” and twice with the Commodores, with “Three Times a Lady” and “Still.”
Richie penned all seven of those chart-toppers, as well as Kenny Rogers’ No. 1 hit “Lady” and the star-studded benefit single “We Are the World,” which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson and which was recorded by a collection of about 40 American music stars billed as USA for Africa, with Richie getting the opening solo.
The most recent album from Richie is 2012’s “Tuskegee,” on which the Alabama-born Richie revisited the country success he had with “Lady” by collaborating with some of the genre’s biggest stars on country versions of many of his hits.
The release returned him to the top of Billboard’s album chart for the third time — following 1983’s “Can’t Slow Down” and 1986’s “Dancing on the Ceiling” — and the first time in 26 years. It also reached the top of the country albums chart.
The latest entry in Richie’s pop culture resume is his role as a judge on “American Idol,” which he joined this year for season 16 (along with Katy Perry and Luke Bryan). He will return in the role next year for season 17.
Tickets for Richie’s “All the Hits” concert go on sale to Hawaii residents and military at 10 a.m. Saturday at ticketmaster.com, the Blaisdell box office and by phone at 800-745-3000, with an eight-ticket limit. There will also be a code-only presale from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday (use codes “KSSK” and “KHON”).
General ticket sales commence at 10 a.m. Nov. 3; prices start at $55.75 and top out at $495.75 for front-row meet-and-greet packages.
