The North Shore competitive surf season kicked into gear Sunday with the first day of the HIC Pro.
Three Hawaii surfers — Cody Young, Wyatt McHale and Kai Lenny — were among the big rippers, advancing through to the third round, which will be held today, conditions permitting.
Young, seeded directly into the second round, scored a 9.5 wave at Sunset Beach in 15-foot wave faces in his heat victory.
McHale got through the first round with a second-place finish and then topped it off with a victory in his second-round heat. Lenny captured his first heat and then finished second in the second round to advance.
The World Surf League event is a qualifier for the upcoming season-ending Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which starts with the Hawaiian Pro at Alii Beach Park in Haleiwa (Nov. 12-24), moves on to the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach (Nov. 25 through Dec. 6) and finishes up with the Billabong Pipe Masters (Dec. 8-20) at Ehukai Beach.
The 2018 WSL world champion will be determined at the Pipe Masters, which is the finale of the world championship tour. No. 1 Gabriel Medina of Brazil, No. 2 Julian Wilson of Australia, and No. 3 Filipe Toledo 0f Brazil are the only three left in contention.
UH men’s golf team in 20th on Kauai
The UH men’s golf team sits in 20th place after the first round of the seventh annual Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Sunday in Princeville, Kauai.
The UH team of Justin Arcano, Justin Ngan, Nick Nelson, Cameron Kaneko and AJ Teraoka combined to shoot a 299. Arcano, a sophomore, shot a team low 1-over 73 and sits in a tie for 52nd entering today.
No. 11 Pepperdine leads the field with a 273 team score.
