Man who died in Waipahu shooting identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a victim in a deadly shooting in Waipahu as Sonny Leopoamo.

Leopoamo, 28, of Mililani died of a gunshot wound to the head. The manner of death was classified as a homicide, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police have opened a murder investigation into the shooting that occurred Sunday night near a strip club on Waipahu Street.

Officers responded to a report of gunshots near the intersection of Waipahu Street and Waipahu Depot Road sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.

When police arrived, they discovered an unresponsive male later identified as Leopoamo with a gunshot wound to the head.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and pronounced him dead.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail said the suspect fled the scene.

There are no arrests at this time.
