Pedestrian, 38, dies while crossing Likelike Highway

A 38-year-old pedestrian died after he was struck by a vehicle in Kalihi Wednesday night.

Positive identification is pending.

Police said a black 2004 Ford pickup truck operated by a 64-year-old Kaneohe man was traveling north on Likelike Highway at the intersection of Kula Kolea Drive when the vehicle struck the pedestrian who was walking across the highway towards Nalanieha Street at approximately 10:50 p.m.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, police said.

Lt. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said there are no crosswalks in the area. There is a pedestrian bridge at the intersection.

Emergency Medical Services responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time.

This is the 61st traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 42 at the same time last year.

The crash is also the 27th pedestrian fatality on the island compared to nine pedestrian deaths at the same time last year, according to Slayter.

The investigation on the crash is ongoing.
