The Tropicana Resort & Casino is shown in Las Vegas. It’s one of the 49 casinos that have rooms going for under $40 this year.

The holiday season is prime time for finding a low room rate in Las Vegas, and this year is no exception.

Last week the researchers at the Las Vegas Advisor canvassed every casino in town, looking for the best leads on lodging in December. The rates below were available either by consulting casino websites, using third-party reservations facilities or the reservation codes on LasVegasAdvisor.com. Even if you don’t use the internet, the list serves as a guide to potential low rates you can secure by phone.

Rates are higher during the National Finals Rodeo, which runs through Dec. 15. The deepest discounts will be available Dec. 16-24.

All told, 49 casinos have rooms going for under $40 this year. Here’s the line-up (rates change often and are not guaranteed):

>> Under $20 Club: El Cortez, Excalibur, Golden Gate, Gold Spike, Silver Sevens, Tropicana

>> Under $30 Club: Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, Artisan, Boulder Station, Circus Circus, the D, Ellis Island, Fiesta Rancho, Fremont, Hooters, Luxor, Palace Station, Plaza, Santa Fe Station, Stratosphere, Texas Station, Wild Wild West

>> Under $40 Club: Arizona Charlie’s Decatur, Bally’s, California, Downtown Grand, Eastside Cannery, Fiesta Henderson, Flamingo, Four Queens, Gold Coast, Hard Rock, Harrah’s, LINQ, Main Street Station, Orleans, Red Rock, Rio, Sam’s Town, Silverton, SLS, Tuscany, Westgate

>> High End: The pre-holidays also offer a great opportunity to stay at the more expensive casinos at bargain prices. The following all quoted mid-week rates of $85 or less: Golden Nugget, New York-New York, TI, Mirage, Park MGM, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, Paris, Planet Hollywood, Palms, Palms Place, Cromwell

Question: Where is the tallest Christmas tree this year?

Answer: For the third year, The Park at New York-New York boasts the city’s tallest at 80 feet. It’s part of the “Holiday Experience at the Park,” comprising holiday displays and activities through the end of the year. The Park is located in front of the T-Mobile Arena.
