Tenants at disadvantage in eviction cases, study finds

    A couple living at Punahou Gardens had to move out of their Makiki unit after the court issued an eviction order in a lawsuit filed against them in November by their landlord. The couple did not hire an attorney to dispute the charges and filed a counterclaim, which is still pending.

About nine of every 10 eviction lawsuits in the state result in tenants losing their homes, an outcome that partly reflects a huge disparity in who gets help from attorneys, according to a landmark study that analyzed a decade of Hawaii court data. Read more
