Kauai volunteers sought to count Garden Isle homeless

Volunteers are being sought to count Kauai’s homeless population for the annual Point in Time Count that is scheduled from Jan. 23 to 28.

The overall statewide homeless population has dropped in each of the last two nation-wide Point in Time Counts, but Hawaii still has the highest per capita homeless population in the nation.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and are required to attend training on Dec. 19 at a location to be determined.

Volunteers can register with Sharon Graham with the County of Kauai Housing Agency at 241-4427 or by emailing her at sgraham@kauai.gov; or through Sally Chidester at Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity at 245-4077 ext. 228 or via email at schidester@keoinc.org.

The Kauai County Housing Agency and the Kaua‘i Community Alliance are organizing this year’s Point in Time Count volunteers on Kauai.

In a statement, Kanani Fu, housing director for the Kauai County Housing Agency, said: “Volunteers will discover their own power to make a difference, and work with agencies serving the homeless population. The annual Point in Time Count provides critical data and information that will be used to enhance homeless services and to prioritize homeless related initiatives.”
