Moped rider critically injured in head-on crash on Maui

A 25-year-old moped rider was critically injured after he collided head-on with a vehicle in Kihei Wednesday night.

Police said a black moped operated by the 25-year-old Kihei man was traveling southbound in the northbound lane of South Kihei Road at approximately 10:35 p.m. when he collided with a silver 2018 Cadillac XTS four-door sedan traveling north on the roadway.

The rider was thrown from his moped upon impact. Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which occurred south of Nohokai Street.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said the driver and passenger of the Cadillac, both visitors from Alaska, did not sustain any injuries.

Police temporarily closed South Kihei Road between Nohokai Street and Piikea Avenue for approximately three hours to investigate.

It’s unknown at this time whether speed, drugs or alcohol were involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
