Wanted fugitive killed by Maui police

Police say officers killed a wanted fugitive in shootout in Wailuku this morning.

Maui Police Department spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said the shootout happened after officers stopped a stolen pickup truck on Kaohu Street about 11 a.m. He said the officers believed the pickup was being operated by a 26-year-old male who is wanted for several outstanding arrest warrants.

The driver of the truck sustained injuries to which the officers administered first aid, Okamoto said. The male was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Okamoto said the only other person to suffer injuries in the shooting was an officer who refused treatment. He said the investigation is on-going.

Maui police is not identifying the man killed in the shootout.

Just two days ago the police department asked for the public’s help in locating 26-year-old Kaulana “Togi” Reinhardt, who is wanted on four probation retake warrants.
