Kauai County officials Friday shut down vehicle parking along the shoreline at Black Pot Beach in Hanalei as a precautionary measure due to beach erosion.

Vehicular access at the beach between the Hanalei River mouth and Hanalei Pier is prohibited until further notice.

“We have been monitoring the area for the past few days and the erosion has come to a point where it is dangerous for vehicles to attempt to access this area,” said Lenny Rapozo, director of Kauai County’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

“Vehicular access in the area will be blocked until further notice as a safety precaution,” Rapozo said in a news release.

Public parking is available along Weke Road, across from the beach.

Meanwhile, crews will be trimming ironwood trees along the shoreline to address safety concerns.

Man’s body found at Haleakala

Maui police and park rangers are investigating a fatality at Haleakala National Park’s Kipahulu District.

At about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, park rangers received a report that a man’s body was discovered in the Palikea streambed, according to a Haleakala National Park news release.

Park rangers, police and firefighters recovered the body. The man’s identity hadn’t been determined Friday.

Park officials said Palikea Stream is not open to the public.

The cause of death is pending.
