USS Bowfin celebrates 75th anniversary of its launch

    The USS Bowfin Museum, located next to the USS Arizona Memorial visitor center, is celebrating the sub’s 75th birthday this week. Martin Chagnon did some rust prevention maintenance last week ahead of an expected influx of visitors.

    The USS Bowfin submarine was launched Dec. 7, 1942, receiving the nickname “Pearl Harbor Avenger.” It was one of 15 World War II subs that weren’t scrapped.

In the aftermath of Dec. 7, 1941, much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet surface force at Pearl Harbor was in shambles. Twenty-one ships, including eight battleships, were sunk or damaged. Read more
