Kilauea lava lake produces biggest overflow in 10 years

    The slowly rising lava lake at Kilauea’s summit was close to the rim of the Overlook crater and the floor of Halemaumau Crater on Saturday. At that time the lava lake was roughly 20 feet from the rim. On Monday the largest overflow in 10 years flowed out of Overlook crater.

    At Halemaumau Crater, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists early Monday used a laser range-finder to measure the depth to the lava lake surface at its peak level.

Lava from Kilauea’s summit lava lake spilled out of its Overlook crater onto the floor of Halemaumau Crater on Monday, resulting in the largest overflow since the summit vent opened up 10 years ago. Read more
