A 42-year-old man Thursday pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run on the H-1 freeway.
Steven Headington appeared before Judge Colette Garibaldi at Circuit Court via closed-circuit video link on charges of one count of accidents involving death or serious injury in Phillip Wallace’s death and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
Deputy Public Defender Craig Nagamine pleaded not guilty to the charges on Headington’s behalf. Garibaldi confirmed his bail at $100,000 and set his trial for August.
Police said Wallace, 38, was thrown from the bed of a Toyota pickup truck after the vehicle crashed into a concrete median at the Wilder Avenue offramp May 21. A van then struck Wallace while he was lying on the ground.
Wallace died at the scene. Police said Headington, described as the suspected driver of the pickup truck, fled on foot. His 23-year-old female passenger sustained a head injury in the crash.
Officers arrested Headington in Makaha on June 7.
Police are continuing their investigation into the crash and how Wallace ended up in the bed of the pickup.
Emergency Medical Services had reported the truck was involved in a minor incident with a sedan. When the truck driver attempted to drive away, a passenger from the sedan jumped into the bed of the pickup.
