Big Island police seek escaped inmate

Hawaii County police are looking for inmate Michael Blanco, who escaped from the Hale Nani Reintegration Center in Panaewa at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Blanco walked out of the furlough center, then ran as security staff told him to stop, according to the state Department of Public Safety. He is serving a sentence for promotion of a dangerous drug and was scheduled for a December parole hearing.

Blanco, 42, weighs 190 pounds and is 5 feet 9 inches tall. He has brown eyes and brown hair.

Anyone who sees Blanco is asked to call 911.

Kauai

Injured hiker rescued on Kauai

Firefighters rescued an injured hiker Monday near Hoopii Falls in Kapaa, according to a statement from the Kauai Fire Department.

The 57-year-old woman from Iowa had reportedly fell and injured her leg while hiking along the trail. Firefighters were notified at around 1:30 p.m. and hiked the trail until they located her in the water, being tended to by a family member and bystander in a rocky area below the falls.

The woman was airlifted to a landing area at Kapahi Park where medics were waiting. From there she was taken to Wilcox Hospital.
