A 41-year-old California man died today while swimming in waters off Kapaa on Kauai’s eastside.

The man’s identity has not been released.

About 2:50 p.m., police received a report of a swimmer apparently in distress in waters fronting the vacant lot next to the Plantation Hale Hotel.

People were attempting to assist the man when firefighters arrived at the scene. Firefighters assisted in bringing the man’s unresponsive body to shore and began performing CPR.

Medics then transported the man to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This is Kauai’s 11th reported drowning since the start of 2013 and the 13th tourist to drown statewide.

Because of a National Weather Service high surf warning for all north and west facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday, lifeguards urge beach goers to swim near a lifeguard tower.
