2 hikers rescued in separate incidents on Kauai

Two tourists hiking on Kauai’s north shore needed assistance Sunday in two separate rescue attempts.

Kauai firefighters came to the aid of a 54-year-old visitor from Tacoma, Wash. who injured her knee and was rescued about 1/4 mile below Hanakapiai Falls at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Rescue specialists rigged a line and short-hauled one of their team members to the injured hiker, where he treated the patient and then short-hauled her on the fire department’s helicopter to the Princeville Airport. From there, awaiting medics transported her to Wilcox Hospital.

Earlier Sunday morning, a 61-year-old visitor from St. Paul, Minn. who injured her left forearm was rescued by Hanalei firefighters about 1/2 mile from the trailhead of the Kalalau Trail. She was also taken to Wilcox Hospital.

The Minnesota woman had been hiking about 1/2 mile from the trailhead at approximately 2 p.m. when she sustained the injury.
