Maui firefighters have contained but not extinguished a 30-acre brush fire that began Sunday in Puukolii near Lahaina.

Fire crews continued to mop up hot spots within the perimeter today and will remain on scene to monitor the fire.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the fire began just before 4 p.m. Sunday, and fire personnel called the blaze 100 percent contained just after noon Monday.

No structures were damaged, but the fire got as close as 50 feet to the nearest townhouses.

The fire was 50 percent contained Sunday night.
