It took 25 Big Island firefighters nearly eight hours to bring a brush fire, which scorched more than 1,000 acres, under control Sunday night.
The fire was reported just after 2:31 p.m. Sunday at Kaaulalu near South Point.
“Fast moving” tradewinds spread the flames to the northwest, the Hawaii County Fire Department said in a news release.
Five engines, two tankers, two helicopter, two bulldozers and other Fire Department crews and four-wheel drive vehicles battled the blaze
Firefighters remained on the scene overnight and more water drops were planned for Monday to douse hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries.
