Cal Poly wins Big West hoops tournament title

ANAHEIM, CALIF. >> Seventh-seeded Cal Poly completed an improbable Big West tournament run with a 61-59 defeat of No. 5 Cal State Northridge on Saturday night at the Honda Center, giving the Mustangs their first NCAA Tournament appearance in their 20-year Division I history.

Freshman point guard Ridge Shipley’s top-arc 3-pointer with 13.7 seconds left put the Mustangs up one, and CSUN center Tre Hale-Edmerson was called for an offensive foul at the other end while going for the tying basket with four seconds left.

After Cal Poly (13-19) made one of two free throws, the Matadors (17-18) had to go the length of the court. But they were slow to advance the ball and time expired before CSUN got a shot off.

Cal Poly is expected to receive a 16 seed in the tournament. It lost nine of 11 games heading into the conference tourney.

CSUN knocked out No. 4 Hawaii 87-84 in overtime in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, the top-seeded Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team claimed that Big West tournament title with a 73-58 defeat of second-seeded Cal Poly.
