The state Department of Health is warning the public to stay out of the water from Magic Island to the Kalakaua Avenue bridge over the Ala Wai Canal due to a 1,450-gallon wasterwater spill.

The wastewater overflowed from a manhole fronting 369 Hobron Lane, the department said.

About 300 gallons were recovered by city crews using a Vactor truck, but about 1,450 gallons went into a storm drain fronting 1821 Lepeepee St., according to the state Clean Water Branch.

The storm drain empties into the Ala Wai Canal.

Warning signs are posted and water samples will be collected at first light Sunday, the branch said.

In a separate email message, the city Department of Environmental Services said it responded to the sewage overflow at 3:48 p.m. and arrived at the site at 4:34 p.m.

The city said grease had closed the sewer pipe on Hobron Lane.

Crews released the blockage at 4:58 p.m. and cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area.
