Two people told police they saw a 21-year-old Makaha man stab an employee of the Waianae Hardware store several time last month, according to court documents.
Chad Hopoate Teisina III, also known as Chad Tisina, is charged with first-degree assault and first-degree robbery in connection with the May 28 incident.
A third witness told a responding police officer that the suspect was walking on the mauka sidewalk of Farrington Highway near Ala Hema street shortly after a man was stabbed at the Waianae McDonald’s restaurant just after 2 p.m. May 28, according to a police affidavit.
The officer stopped Teisina and detained him after finding a hunting knife on him.
The arresting officer said in an affidavit that the suspect pulled a large hunting knife from his waistband and after he was told to sit on the curb of Farrington Highway.
The attack on Jerry Tsuneyoshi was witnessed by a man and a woman at the Waianae Hardware Store, which is next door to the McDonald’s restaurant. Tsuneyoshi is an employee of the store and the owner’s son.
Emergency Medical Services said the 44-year-old victim was slashed on his back, arm and chest. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The police affidavit did not mention a motive for the attack.
Initially, Teisina was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.
The charge was later reduced to first-degree attempted assault and first-degree robbery.
The suspect has also been arrested for theft in Nevada and convicted in 2012 on charges of resisting an officer, possessing an open liquor container and consuming alcohol as a minor.
Teisina is being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $100,000.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in District Court.
