Hawaii County search and rescue divers pulled a 37-year-old man out of the waters off Waawaa in Puna Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to Orr’s Beach at about 3:37 p.m. Friends of the victim said the man got into trouble while swimming. They attempted to rescue him, but he went under.

Rescue personnel located the man underwater about 10 yards offshore, shortly after arriving, and brought him to shore.

The Fire Department helicopter brought the man to a landing zone on Highway 137 and he went by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center.

Firefighters did not release the man’s condition.
