Firefighters were hiking tonight toward a man and his son who called for help after ending up on a cliff face above Dillingham Airfield.

The man and his son, who is under 10, wandered off Kealia Trail and ended up on a cliff in a narrow gully, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig. They called for help about 8 p.m. after reaching a point where they couldn’t go forward or climb back up to the trail.

Seelig said gusting wind and rain prevented firefighters from using a helicopter so firefighters had to hike in to reach the pair.

By 10:15 p.m., firefighters still were making their way to the two. They planned to pull the pair up to the trail with ropes and lead them back out.

Seelig estimated it will take another hour before the firefighters will reach the hikers.
