Former Waianae dentist fined for making false insurance claims

A state judge Wednesday ordered a former Waianae dentist to pay $35,700 in restitution and fines, and to perform 500 hours of community service for making false claims to the state Medicaid program and Hawaii Dental Service.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins found Joseph Perrino guilty Wednesday and imposed the sentence.

A state Attorney General’s Office news release said Perrino operated a dental clinic in Waianae for 15 years until January 2011.

The state said Perrino submitted claims for dental restorations but in fact did not perform such work or provided a service far less involved and less costly than a restoration.

The state’s MedQuest program discovered the fraudulent claims during a routine review.
