The number of Hawaii residents and businesses filing for bankruptcy fell in April for the 10th consecutive month, according to a report issued Friday by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
There were 162 cases filed in April, 21 percent fewer than the 206 cases filed the same month a year earlier. Bankruptcy filings have been on a downward trend since early 2011, tracking improvements in Hawaii’s job market and the broader economy. At their peak bankruptcy cases averaged 330 a month in 2010 as the local economy recovered from the 2008-2009 recession.
Around the state, bankruptcies fell by 18 percent to 99 cases in Honolulu County, and by 55 percent to 25 cases in Maui County. Bankruptcy filings rose by 30 percent to 26 cases in Hawaii County, and by 20 percent to 12 cases in Kauai County.
