Kalei Hanawahine hit two doubles and scored three times to lead Hawaii to a 9-7 come-from-behind win over Albany on Saturday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
Albany (0-3) scored six runs in a disastrous first inning for Hawaii (3-4) and starter Scott Squier. The first six batters all reached base and the Great Danes sent 11 men to the plate as Hawaii committed three errors — two on catcher’s interference calls.
The Rainbow Warriors slowly chipped away at the lead before scoring three runs in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead.
Marcus Doi did not play with a hamstring injury, forcing Hanawahine into the leadoff spot. The senior outfielder was hitting .136 (3-for-33) entering the game before finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Squier (1-0) gave up just one run after the first inning and threw 121 pitches, giving up six hits and three walks with three hit batters. Four of the seven runs he gave up were unearned.
Adam Hurley started for Doi in left field and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Austin Wobrock tripled and scored in the fourth and finished 2-for-4 and Juliene Jones was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Hawaii scored nine runs in a game for the second straight day after failing to do so once in the entire 2013 season. The Rainbow Warriors finished with 12 hits.
Freshman Gordon Cardenas worked the final two innings to earn the save.
Senior Scott Kuzminsky (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will try to pitch UH to a series sweep of Albany in the final game of the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
