Hawaii sweeps South Dakota in volleyball

Senior hitter Emily Hartong and sophomore hitter Tai Manu-Olevao shared team high-honors with 13 kills each as No. 7 Hawaii ran its winning streak to seven in a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 victory over South Dakota today in the Shocker Classic volleyball tournament in Wichita, Kansas.

It was the first road match of the season for the Rainbow Wahine (9-1, 1-0 SC), who saw Hartong turn in her fifth double-double when adding 13 kills. Senior setter Mita Uiato had her fourth double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs against the Coyotes (9-4, 1-0).

“It was a struggle for us all night, but we were able to play well when we needed at the ends of all three sets,”  said Hawaii coach Dave Shoji who used all 13 players on the travel roster. “We know we’ll have to play better tomorrow.”

Hawaii next faces No. 23 Creighton 7-2, 0-0) Friday at noon Hawaii time. 

The match lasted 83 minutes. It was a career-high in kills for Manu-Olevao, 

Senior libero Ali Longo had a team-high 14 digs as the Wahine won the dig battle 55-40.

Junior hitter Kendall Kritenbrink led South Dakota (9-4, 0-1) with a match-high 14 kills.
