Hiker airlifted from Koko Head Crater’s back side

A woman hiker got into trouble on the way down from Koko Head Crater Monday morning and had to be rescued by the firefighters.

The Honolulu Fire Department received her call for help just before 11 a.m., said Fire Capt Terry Seelig.

The hiker, in her late 20s, had climbed up the Koko Head stairs, on the Hawaii Kai side, and the was coming down the back side of Koko Head Crater when she had difficulties about half way down and called for help on her cell phone. Using a helicopter, firefighters lowered a sling to airlift the woman off the ridge just after noon.

The woman suffered minor scrapes and did not need medical attention, Seelig said.
