Hiker from Colorado dies from fall on Maui

Maui police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old hiker from Colorado who fell 50 feet today while hiking the Waihou Spring trail within the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve, Maui fire officials said.

Fire Department personnel from Makawao Station and Kahului Station responded to the incident on the west-facing slope of Haleakala around 11:30 a.m., officials said.

The victim was reportedly hiking the Waihou Spring trail with three other hikers when he slipped and fell roughly 50 feet.

Officials said rescue personnel hiked the man out of the reserve, and his injuries later proved to be fatal.

Police are investigating the incident.
