A federal judge in Hawaii is setting conditions for the pretrial release of a defense contractor accused of giving military secrets to his Chinese girlfriend.
U.S. District Court Judge Leslie Kobayashi said Tuesday Benjamin Bishop will be placed under house arrest at the Mahoney Hale halfway house near downtown Honolulu.
He may only leave for medical reasons, to visit his attorney and attend religious services. His attorney or an approved third party custodian has to accompany him.
Kobayashi is restricting Bishop’s use of the telephone and Internet. She’s prohibiting him from possessing a cellphone.
Kobayashi says Bishop will be taken from Honolulu’s Federal Detention Center to Mahoney Hale when the halfway house sets passwords for its computers, which could take two weeks. Bishop won’t receive his own password.
