A state jury returned guilty verdicts this afternoon in the trial of a 22-year-old man charged with killing one Honolulu police officer at a traffic stop two years ago and injuring another.
The jury found James Dorsey, 22, guilty of misdemeanor negligent homicide in the Sept. 13, 2011 death of officer Eric Fontes and guilty of felony negligent injury of officer Herman "Sam" Scanlan.
Circuit Judge Glenn Kim did not schedule a sentencing date because of the inconsistent findings in the two verdicts for the same act. One verdict requires a finding of simple negligence while the other requires a finding to a higher standard of negligence. He scheduled a hearing in two weeks for the lawyers to argue whether Dorsey should face sentencing for a felony or misdemeanor.
