Herwin Magbulos, 26, was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of 59-year-old Darryle Wong.

An Oahu jury returned a guilty verdict on Friday for second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a homeless man in a makeshift structure under the H-1 freeway near the Honolulu airport.

Herwin Magbulos, 26, will receive life in prison with the possibility of parole when he is sentenced by Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario in October.

The jury deliberated for about an hour before convicting Magbulos of murder in the stabbing death of 59-year-old Darryle Wong on May 4, 2013.

Magbulos testified in court that he went to the homeless encampment for “ice” and gave $30 to Wong for drugs. He said while waiting for the drugs inside Wong’s makeshift structure, Wong attacked him with a piece of wood and he stabbed Wong with two knives in self defense.

Deputy prosecutor Kaina Awong had argued that Magbulos could have easily outrun or gone around Wong, who was a diabetic drug user with health problems.

When a neighbor asked Magbulos what he had done, Awong said Magbulos responded, “let him die.”
