A female tourist taking photos at Kauai’s Kealia Beach was swept into the ocean Wednesday, and her husband got in trouble when he went in after her.

Lifeguards pulled both from the ocean and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the woman, Kauai County said in a statement.

They remained at Wilcox Memorial Hospital today, with the woman, 28, in guarded condition and the man, 31, in satisfactory condition, the county said. Both are from Asia, the county said.

The incident happened around 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, Christmas Day.

Firefighters from the Kealia station arrived by 1:30 p.m. and helped lifeguards and medics with treatment. The medics then transported the couple to Wilcox.

On Jan. 18, at Kalihiwai Bay, about 7 miles up the coast, two men from San Francisco, ages 46 and 47, drowned when a rogue wave swept one in and the other man went in to help him.

A high surf advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. Friday for the north and west shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai, the north shore of Maui and the west shores of Hawaii island. For a daily ocean report, visit www.kauaiexplorer.com.
