Lost hiker on Waipoo Trail in Kokee rescued

Firefighters rescued a 68-year-old man after he got lost while hiking along a popular hiking trail in Kokee.

At about 4 p.m. Sunday, police dispatch received a call from the hiker from California who became unsure of his location while walking along the Waipoo Trail due to the heavy tree canopy, according to a news release by the Kauai Fire Department.

Fire rescue launched Air One and conducted a search while other firefighters hiked into the nearby Kumuwela Trail. Heavy cloud coverage, however, forced Air One to stop its search Sunday evening.

Two members from the fire rescue team were dropped off near Waipoo Falls to search for the hiker by foot. Their search was called off later that night due to hazardous conditions.

Four firefighters returned to the site at about 5:30 a.m. Monday to resume the search. The 68-year-old man was located about two-and-half hours later.

Air One transported the hiker and rescue team to a landing zone along the Wailoo Trail. The fire department reported the hiker was in good health and did not require medical attention.
