A 36-year-old man on a moped died after he crossed the center line on Kokomo Road in Haiku and collided with a 2003 Audi sedan Saturday night, Maui police said.

The victim, believed to be from Washington state, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identify is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the man was driving north on Kokomo Road, just past Lilikoi Road, at about 10:38 p.m. when the crash happened.

The driver of the Audi, a 43-year-old Haiku woman, and her passengers, a 20-year-old Haiku man and a 17-year-old Makawao girl, were not injured.

Police said the moped driver was wearing a helmet and the occupants in the Audi were wearing seat belts.

Police are still investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The death is Maui’s 13th traffic death this year, compared to 20 at the same time last year.
