A visitor from China who could not swim slipped on the reef at Hanauma Bay and fell into about 4-to-5 feet of water, nearly drowning Friday at about 12:30 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services said when the man was pulled from the water by Ocean Safety personnel he was not breathing, but did have a pulse. With medical attention he ultimately began breathing on his own and was taken by paramedics to the hospital.

The man, reported to be in his 40s, is in serious but stable condition, according to EMS.
