Maui firefighters and lifeguards assisted a windsurfer and stand-up paddleboarder who were unable to make it to shore because of high winds Monday off Kihei.

Fronting Waipuilani Park in Kihei, a 41-year-old male windsurfer broke his rig and was paddling for more than an hour trying to make his way in at 1:13 p.m. today. An Ocean Safety watercraft picked him up about 800 yards offshore and brought him in.

Near the Maui Beach Resort 515 S. Kihei Road, a woman in in her 20s from Lahaina in her first time stand-up paddling, could not stand up because of the wind at 1:18 p.m today. An Ocean Safety watercraft  picked her up about 400 yards off shore and towed her in.

No medical attention was needed in both cases.
