No. 11 Hawaii upsets No. 3 UCLA in volleyball for second night

Brook Sedore put down a match-high 22 kills and No. 11 Hawaii upset No. 3 UCLA for a second straight night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball play, prevailing 22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 15-11 Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Siki Zarkovic added 13 kills and three aces for the Rainbow Warriors (11-6, 9-5 MPSF), who have matched their win total from last season. It was first time since 2006 that Hawaii took the conference series against the Bruins (13-4, 10-4).

Robart Page led UCLA with 16 kills and Gonzalo Quiroga added 15. Hawaii Baptist graduate Michael Fisher, a freshman outside hitter, finished with a career-high 13 kills over the 2 hours and 38 minutes.

A turnstile crowd of 2,715 (3,818 tickets) saw Hawaii trail 3-0 to start Set 5. The Rainbow Warriors rallied to tie at 6, the first of six ties in the final set.

Hawaii broke an 11-all deadlock on one of Taylor Averill’s 10 kills to jumpstart a 4-0 closing run. The Rainbow Warriors finished it out on a Page hitting error, an ace by Zarkovic and Sedore’s final kill.

Hawaii outblocked UCLA 10-7.5, with Nick West in on eight. The Rainbow Warriors finished with a 6-3 advantage in aces and 34-29 edge in digs in handing the Bruins consecutive losses for the first time this season..
