No. 2 Pepperdine ends No. 9 Hawaii’s season in volleyball

Siki Zarkovic put down 18 kills and Brook Sedore and Taylor Averill each added 12 but it was not enough as No. 9 Hawaii saw its season ended Saturday night by Pepperdine 19-25, 28-26, 25-18, 26-24 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match in Malibu, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors (15-12, 13-11 MPSF) needed to beat the Waves (18-6, 18-6) and also have BYU defeat UCLA Saturday in order to advance to the playoffs. The Bruins handed the Cougars their fourth straight loss in a match between two teams that Hawaii beat twice this season.

UCLA takes the final berth in the MPSF tournament which starts next Saturday.

Pepperdine ends up tied for the MPSF title but BYU has the No. 1 seed via a tiebreaker with the Waves. Pepperdine earns the second seed, Stanford the third seed and UC Santa Barbara the fourth seed.

Hawaii libero Kobly Kanetake finished with 11 digs. Sedore and Averill both had two aces and Nick West was in on seven of the team’s nine digs.

For Pepperdine, Punahou product Josh Taylor reached the 1,000-kill mark Saturday, finishing with a team-high 18 kills. Hawaii transfer J.J. Mosolf added 12 kills and 10 digs for the Waves.
