No. 7 Oregon stuns Hawaii in 10 innings

Austin Wobrock’s fourth error of the series allowed Tyler Baumgartner to score the go-ahead run with two outs in the 10th inning and Oregon rallied from two runs down in the ninth to beat Hawaii 6-5 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

A.J. Balta hit an RBI double and J.B. Bryant followed with an RBI single in the ninth inning to tie the game after UH (0-3) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead.

Alan Baldwin hit a pinch-hit two-run single to put Hawaii ahead 4-3 and Marcus Doi followed with an RBI single to give UH a two-run lead.

Jordan DePonte (0-1) took the loss after hitting Aaron Payne to open the 10th. Freshman Bryce Ah Sam replaced DePonte with the bases loaded and one out. He got Steven Packard to ground into a fielder’s choice and got the ground ball he wanted to Wobrock, whose throw to first was low and in the dirt.

Wobrock had three of UH’s eight hits and Doi singled, scored twice and drove in a run.

Starter Scott Squier threw 103 pitches in seven quality innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Oregon freshman Matt Krook went seven innings in his UO debut, giving up two unearned runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Jake Reed (1-0) earned the win in relief for Oregon (3-0), which has now won 10 in a row against Hawaii.

The final game of the series is Monday at 1:05 p.m. Senior right-hander Scott Kuzminsky will start for UH.
