    A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Tonga this afternoon.

No tsunami is expected from a magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Tonga this afternoon.

The earthquake struck at 3:29 p.m. Hawaii time, about 1:29 p.m. in Tonga. It was centered about 99 miles west northwest of Hihifo, Tonga and about 240 miles west southwest of Apia, Samoa.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says based on available data, there is no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami.
