The annual Police Week memorial walk will close several streets near the state Capitol and the Police Department headquarters Monday afternoon.

The walk begins at 6 p.m. from the police station on Beretania Street to the Capitol, where a memorial service and candlelight vigil for fallen officers will be held.

Two makai lanes on Beretania Street between Victoria and Richards streets will close starting at 5 p.m. A third lane will close at 5:30 p.m.

Alapai Street between King and Beretania will also be closed at 6 p.m. and traffic will be redirected at the intersection of Punchbowl and King streets.

Vehicles heading makai on Punchbowl Street will be required to turn right on Beretania Street and no vehicles will be allowed in the mauka lanes of Punchbowl between King and Beretania.

The memorial walk and candlelight vigil is the highlight of Police Week, which is observed around the nation to honor and remember law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

The vigil begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Capitol rotunda. Law enforcement officers and family members of officers killed in the line of duty will participate in the walk, service and vigil.

Since 1903, 45 Honolulu police officers have died while protecting the public. Their names are listed on the HPD Roll of Honor at www.honolulupd.org.
