SALT LAKE CITY >> A University of Utah football player has been dismissed from the team after pleading guilty to a road rage assault that knocked a man unconscious.

Coach Kyle Whittingham announced the dismissal Monday, after 24-year-old Arthur Allen Bridenstine was sentenced to 18 months of probation for the September incident in Centerville.

The Standard-Examiner reports Bridenstine punched a 20-year-old man in a parking lot that day, knocking him unconscious. Bridenstine claims the man tried to run him off the road.

The man was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries.

The University of Utah’s team roster says Bridenstine was a redshirt freshman linebacker from Kahuku, Hawaii. He did not play this past season.

Bridenstine told the judge that the incident taught him to not take matters into his own hands.
