Safety drills being held at Oahu high schools this week

Safety drills for dealing with emergencies are being conducted this week at public high schools on Oahu.

The state Department of Education said in a press release this afternoon it was working with the Honolulu Police Department to hold drills at several high schools.

“While these drills were planned for some time, we recognize that the tragedy that took place at a Nevada school this morning reinforces the need for continued diligence in ensuring our schools are prepared for emergency situations,” Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi said. “We extend heartfelt sympathies to the school community in Nevada and the families who have lost their loved ones.”

The DOE said it also conducts annual training for all security personnel.

“We appreciate the partnership with HPD and thank our school communities for their understanding of upcoming emergency drills at our schools,” Matayoshi said.
