Serb nationalists burn Croatian flag in anger

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A few hundred Serbian nationalists have burned a Croatian flag to protest the U.N. war crimes court, which has overturned the convictions of two Croatian generals.

Many in Serbia are furious that appeals judges at the court on Friday freed generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, who had been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for murdering and expelling Serbs from Croatia in a 1995 offensive.

Supporters of the extremist Serbian Radical Party rallied in front of the presidency building Saturday demanding that the government abandon plans to join the 27-nation European Union and cut ties with the court in The Hague, Netherlands. The crowd carried banners reading "Stop The Hague" and chanted nationalist slogans.

Serbia’s leaders have warned the court ruling will fuel Serb-Croat divisions.
