About 9,200 Hawaii Electric Light Co. customers on the Big Island remained without power Saturday and some may not get power restored until next week or longer, company officials said.
Power was knocked out by Tropical Storm Iselle late Thursday and Friday and remained out in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Puna, Orchidland Estates, Leilani Estates, Nanawale, Kapoho, Kalapana, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores, Waipunahina, and small pockets from Hamakua through Volcano,
Crews are working to restore power, but officials said crews are still assessing the damage and customers should expect extended outages into next week and in some cases much longer, particularly the Puna area.
Customers can call 969-6666 to report an outage in other areas.
Fallen trees blocking access to remote areas, including Puna, are hampering efforts to restore service. Crews are focusing efforts on repairing damage to the island’s transmission system, which serves as the backbone of the electric grid, officials said.
